The whole outer wall is machined into close vertical flutes, and four narrow slots are cut clean through so that the inner sleeve shows behind them in a darker tone. The finish is matte rather than bright, which keeps the ridges readable. Inside, the maker's name and the year are engraved along the sleeve where only the wearer sees them.
